Diva'le

I have created a fantastic world. A world which is Women-centered, in which each of the female manifestations offer a worthy and legitimate focal point.

I have made Porcelain figurines, each accentuating another feminine or sexual element. The figurines are on the scale from sexy to ludicrous, relaxed to limp, moving between liberation and loss of control, defiance and release, comic and tragic, the ideal and its disillusionment.

Next to the figurines are abstract forms made of a black ceramic material, which I have developed myself. This material  spontaneously swells during firing to over four times its original size. Through various manipulations of combining this clay with “plain clay” only a  partial control over the rising process can be obtained. The plain clay serves several purposes: On one hand, it’s a limitation, a boundary and confinement for the black material. But at the same time it contains it, offering structural support without which,  the black clay would lose its form completely and end up as a puddle in the kiln.

The encounter between the objects creates scenes and scenarios which shed new light on one another.

I see these dynamic combinations as catalisators, and a playful provocation for further thoughts.
